image

Journey begins in steamy Villahermosa

image

built on the banks of the (almost flooding) Grijalva river

image

where we see the legendary Olmec heads (protected from a river on the verge)

image

Then to our first Maya graveyard to see the enormous tombstone of king Pakal

image

and incense burners that fed the gods

image

who were worshipped in the great center of Palenque

image

image

The so called pyramid of the sun could not keep the clouds away. This is a rain forest after all!

image

and construction that lasts.

image

the self portraits became epidemic!

image

The sun receding over Tonina and our journey among the resting stones.

image

Mid-trip we leave the land of the dead Maya

image

San Cristobal de Las Casas, our base camp

image

San Cristobal is a colonial town

image

surrounded by Maya villages

image

A Day of the Dead cleaning is underway

image

the uplands prepare for a major fiesta

image

There is no one better than Chip Morris to take us into this fiesta

image

and behind the doors of the highland Maya

image

and enter the land of the living Maya

image

where we come to celebrate the dead Maya,

image

immersing ourselves in the great festivals for the departed souls

image

where the dead

image

are surrounded by life

image

image

image

image

image

image

image

our travels take us into small villages

image

image

image

image

image

image

image

image

to meet the people who are the highland Maya

image

and a bit about who they are.

image

And visa versa.

image

We visit the village of Tenejapa

image

where we see how borcade weaving is done.

image

And visit with a master sisal bag maker.

image

There will be fine goodies to buy,

image

and tortillas as good as they get!

image

We will feast on Day of the Dead food,

image

and have time to relax and explore colonial San Cristobal.
